Welcome to New Family Beginnings!

Kalli MatsuhashiNew Family Beginnings offers counseling services to individuals, couples, and families in the Twin Cities metro area. Services range from one-on-one sessions to help resolve anxiety or anger issues to sessions where the whole family joins the process to create a calmer, happier, and more cooperative way of living.

New Family Beginnings is owned and managed by me, Kalli Matsuhashi, Licensed Psychological Practitioner, Counselor, and certified hypnotherapist. The vision I hold for New Family Beginnings is based on the belief that healthy families are the foundation of a healthy society. I focus on the strengths of each individual and also the family unit as I work together with my clients for understanding, resolution, and growth.

Introduction to Services

  • I use a brief therapy approach in my work with individuals and families. Work with individuals usually takes place over 5 to 10 sessions. Couple's sessions are usually around 10 to 15 sessions, and family therapy sessions are usually around 15 to 20 sessions, sometimes more, depending on the situation.
  • My theoretical approach is very practical: when working with adolescents and adults, I typically use a combination of psychodynamic theory as well as more cognitive- behavioral techniques, and throughout I work together with my clients to focus on the results the client is looking to achieve. In each session we review the progress that has been made, discuss the next steps, and mutually agree on the direction of therapy. When working with children, I may use hypnosis, but will more commonly recommend play therapy (for the child or the child and his/her caregivers). There is very strong empirical support for the effectiveness of this type of therapy with children (for more information, jump to the section on play therapy).
  • New Family Beginnings does not accept third-party reimbursement, so although payment is out-of-pocket, it ensures maximum confidentiality and flexibility in treatment approach and length of treatment.
  • Although I do not accept third-party reimbursement, I am "insurance ready," meaning that I will provide you with the paperwork necessary (e.g., receipts, insurance codes) so that you can seek reimbursement on your own.
  • All sessions (except for play therapy) are 80 minutes long - a full 30 minutes longer than most therapy sessions. Play therapy sessions are 50 to 60 minutes long.
